Apple's Mac Continues to Outpace a Recovering Computer Market

New figures say that the global PC market — including the Mac — has continued to grow in Q2 2024, with Apple among those driving the growth.


Research by Canalys previously showed that sales of the Mac, including MacBook models, had grown in the US in Q1 2024. Now, with its global Q2 figures, the company again shows Apple growing its market share.

Overall Market Growth

 - Global PC Market: Grew by 3.4% year on year in Q2 2024, totaling 62.8 million shipped units.

 - Laptops: Represented 50 million units, a 4% rise YoY.

 - Desktops: Shipments rose by 1% to reach 12.8 million units.

Apple's Performance

- Shipments: Apple shipped 5.5 million units.

- Market Share: Apple held a 9% market share, a 6% increase from the same period in 2023.

Top Vendors

1. Lenovo: Best-selling vendor with 14.7 million units, a 4% growth YoY.

2. HP: Shipped 13.7 million units.

3. Dell: Shipped 10.1 million units, experiencing a 2% YoY decline attributed to reduced shipments in the US.

4. Apple: 5.5 million units, 9% market share.

5. Asus: Highest growth with a 17% increase YoY, shipping 4.5 million units, pushing Acer out of the top five.

Market Trends

Canalys reports a turnaround in the market, with a third consecutive quarter of growth. It predicts the trend to continue, mainly due to the upcoming end of support for Windows 10 in October 2025, which will prompt an upgrade cycle. Additionally, growth is expected to rise due to more clarity around Apple's AI strategy with its announcement of Apple Intelligence.
