Alternative iPad App Stores Launching in Europe on September 16

Starting September 16, 2023, iPad users in Europe will be able to download iPadOS apps through third-party app stores. While iPhone users have already had access to platforms like the Epic Games Store, iPad users have not had this option until now. Apple is preparing to make this feature available.

In a post on its developer website on Friday, Apple announced changes related to iPadOS 18 apps distributed in the EU and updated its App Review Guidelines to include iPadOS apps in the Notarization process. This process ensures that apps go through security checks before being released in third-party stores, ensuring they are encrypted and signed for safe distribution.

From September 16, iPad users will be able to download apps not only from the App Store but also from alternative stores. Developers who have agreed to the "Alternative Terms Addendum for EU Apps" will start to see their annual iPadOS app installs accumulate, and the lower App Store commission rate will apply to these apps.

On the same day, alternative browser engines will be allowed in iPadOS apps. Additionally, historical App Install Reports, used with Apple’s fee calculator, will now include iPadOS data. Apple also encourages developers to stay informed about updates to agreements related to third-party app stores, as these agreements now support iPadOS.
