Apple Working to Fix iPadOS 18 Bug That Bricked M4 iPad Pro Devices

Earlier this week, users reported that after installing the iPadOS 18 update, released on Monday, some M4 iPad Pro devices became bricked. In response, Apple has pulled the update for affected models and is now working on a solution.

According to an internal memo obtained by MacRumors, Apple acknowledged the issue that caused some M4 iPad Pro models to no longer turn on after updating to iPadOS 18. Apple stated that only a "small number" of users have been affected. Technicians are instructed to attempt a forced reset on the customer’s iPad before ordering a replacement unit.

While Apple is actively developing a fix, there is no set timeline for its release. In the meantime, users who haven’t updated their M4 iPad Pro devices should remain on iPadOS 17 to avoid this problem. Other iPad models appear unaffected, and the iPadOS 18 update remains available for them.

Affected users have shared that their iPads stopped working after the update process. One user said their iPad turned off mid-update and never turned back on, even when trying to restore the device via a computer.

"I took it to the Apple Store, and they confirmed it was completely bricked," one user shared. "Even though I have Apple Care, they said they need to send it to their engineers before offering a replacement."

It's worth noting that iPadOS 18 introduces a redesigned Home Screen with customizable icons, as well as features like Math Notes, Smart Script handwriting input, live audio transcription, the Calculator app for the first time on iPad, and Game Mode.
