In recent years, Apple’s App Store policies have faced widespread criticism, especially in the US and abroad. However, a new US law has just proven that Apple’s approach to subscription management on the App Store is exemplary. The convenience and transparency of Apple’s subscription management system are now being recognized as a model for the industry.
Apple’s App Store subscription management practices are being held up as a standard that other companies should follow. Earlier today, my colleague Ben Lovejoy reported on new federal and state laws aimed at addressing user-hostile subscription practices. These laws are designed to ensure that canceling an online or app subscription is as easy as signing up. They were introduced in response to some companies making the cancellation process intentionally difficult for users.
The new “click-to-cancel” laws closely mirror Apple’s App Store model. For example, the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has imposed four requirements on all subscriptions:
• Clearly and accurately disclose all material facts
• Clearly state that the subscription will auto-renew until canceled
• Obtain “express informed consent” for automatic renewal
• Make the cancellation process as easy as the sign-up process
These are all things Apple has been doing for years with App Store subscriptions. Occasionally, developers face App Review issues because of how their subscription offerings are designed, but Apple’s strictness ultimately aims to protect users from unethical practices.
A Seamless Subscription Cancellation Experience
One of the standout strengths of the App Store is its easy cancellation process.
I love that after signing up for a new subscription, even just for a free trial, I can immediately open the App Store’s subscription management tools and cancel the subscription quickly. The process is simple, transparent, and leaves no room for complaints.
There may be significant changes coming to the US App Store, depending on the outcome of the ongoing DOJ case. However, I hope the way subscription management works remains the same, as it offers a transparent and seamless experience for users.
