In the second quarter of 2024, the iPhone continued to dominate the global smartphone market, as indicated by Counterpoint's Global Monthly Handset Model Sales Tracker. However, while Apple maintained a strong presence, the overall market share for its top models showed a slight decline compared to the same period in 2023.
The data revealed that the iPhone 15 held the largest market share at 4.1%, followed by the iPhone 15 Pro Max at 3.7%, and the iPhone 15 Pro at 3.1%. This mirrors the previous year's trend, where the iPhone 14 series led the rankings. However, each of the new models saw a 0.1% decrease in their respective market shares compared to the iPhone 14 models in Q2 2023.
A notable shift was observed in the positioning of previous-generation iPhones. The iPhone 14 fell to sixth place with a 1.6% share, a significant drop from the iPhone 13's fourth-place position with 2.6% in Q2 2023. The Samsung Galaxy A15 5G and A15 4G took fourth and fifth places with 2.0% and 1.8%, respectively.
Rounding out the top ten were the Samsung Galaxy A55 in seventh place (1.5%), the Xiaomi Redmi 13C 4G in eighth (1.5%), the Galaxy S24 Ultra in ninth (1.4%), and the Galaxy A05 in tenth (1.4%).
Despite leading the rankings, the report highlighted a slight underperformance in the iPhone 15 series compared to the iPhone 14 series. The iPhone 15 models accounted for 67% of total iPhone sales in the latest quarter, a decrease from the 79% achieved by the iPhone 14 models during the same period last year. This shift suggests a gradual transition in consumer preference towards higher-end models within the iPhone lineup.
As the market evolves, it will be interesting to see how Apple's strategy adapts to maintain its dominant position amidst growing competition and shifting consumer preferences.
