Disney+ Cracks Down on Password Sharing: Extra Fees Now Required for Sharing Outside Your Household

Disney+ has officially launched its new paid sharing program, meaning you can no longer share your Disney+ account with anyone outside of your household unless you pay extra. This policy, now in effect in the U.S. and several other markets, follows Disney’s efforts to crack down on password sharing, much like Netflix’s recent approach.

In the U.S., Disney+ subscribers will need to pay an additional $6.99 per month to add an Extra Member to a Basic subscription, while Premium subscribers will face a $9.99 monthly fee. However, only one Extra Member can be added per account, and this option isn’t available for those subscribed through third-party services or for Disney Bundle subscribers.

For primary account holders who travel, Disney offers a solution if they encounter a message stating, "This TV doesn’t seem to be part of the Household for this account." Users can select “I’M AWAY FROM HOME” or update their Household location, which will trigger a one-time passcode sent to the account’s associated email. This allows continued access while on the go.

Additionally, Disney+ allows users to transfer their profile data—such as watch history and personalized settings—either to their own new account or to an Extra Member profile. This ensures that viewers maintain their preferences, even when switching accounts.

Disney's password-sharing crackdown comes after Netflix's success with a similar initiative, which monitors user activity through address verification, device IDs, and account usage. Disney+ now joins Netflix in enforcing stricter usage policies, ensuring that accounts are only used within a single household.

This new Extra Member feature is available now in the U.S., Canada, Europe, Costa Rica, Guatemala, and parts of the Asia-Pacific region.
